As one of the partner NGOs in the implementation of People’s Participations and People Awareness component of Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) in Delhi, AICURD has been assigned the task of developing a Pilot Scale Model on Participatory Waste Management in Bhalaswa Resettlement Colony which could be later replicated in other part of the city. The overall objective is to set up a community based non-municipal model of waste management.
The following are the major achievements in the area of waste management since inception of the project in December 2001.
- Initiate ice-breaking and rapport building with community.
- Increased awareness in the community about importance of waste management through street plays, film shows, community meetings, rallies, exposure visits etc.
- Dissemination of messages on the need for pursuing waste collection and initiation of the process of waste collection.
- Identification of local persons who would act waste collectors.
- Training of waste collector in collection and disposal of waste in a safe manner.
- Provision of equipment for use in waste collection work.
- Selection of a site of Garbage Station and Composting.
- Completion of civil works at the site of Garbage Station.
