Development of Jute Aprons for Tea Gardens in Jalpaiguri District

Jalpaiguri is one of the richest district of India in terms of production of tea. There are about 168 tea gardens in the district. Itself and about 90 tea gardens in the neighbouring Darjeeling district. The pluckers use aprons made the plastic/polyethylene or tarpaulin to protect themselves from pricks and some time against rain too. In this background it was thought worthwhile to develop appropriate technology for production of eco-friendly jute based aprons in a pilot plant level and facilitate commercialization of the new product. It is designed not only to bring out the much needed diversification of jute but also ameliorate the condition of rural people living below poverty. Line as well as the handloom weavers through value addition to jute. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India sanctioned financial assistance for implementation of the project September, 2001. The duration of the project sanction by the Government of India in three years.
