It was felt that though women in rural areas of Jalpaiguri have skills in making several useful articles out of bamboo, cane, jute, straw etc. Available in plenty in Jalpaiguri District, these resources have not been properly harnessed due to difficulties faced by people in procurement of raw materials in time and at reasonable price and marketing the final product. AICURD therefore, decided to launch a project for promotion of handicaps in Jalpaiguri District. By making arrangements for supply of raw materials, technological inputs, training of artisans, marketing support etc. With assistance available under Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hast Shilp Vikash Yojana (AHSVY) on the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The main objective is to ensure that handicrafts emerge as the alternative rural economic activity paving way for the people of Jalpaiguri District to avail of opportunities for gainful work through self employment.
